Item type:Book chapter, Two for the Price of One? – The National Bibliography of Scotland and the English Short Title Catalogue(2025)Hagan, AnetteThis article gives an overview of the definition and intended scope, the goals, inclusion criteria, presentation and current state of the National Bibliography of Scotland. It explores its relationship to the English Short Title Catalogue, of which it forms a sub-set, and explains the different ways in which the National Bibliography of Scotland goes beyond the English Short Title Catalogue. The article discusses existing datasets that meet the inclusion criteria of the National Bibliography of Scotland as well as the gaps that still need to be filled. Some datasets have already been added while others are either only available in print or in an electronic format that cannot be converted in an automated way into catalogue records for extraction into the National Bibliography of Scotland. For some parts, no ready datasets exist in any format. The article therefore characterises the National Bibliography of Scotland as work in progress.24 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

Item type:Conference paper (published), 200 Manuscripts in 200 Days: High Throughput Digitization of the Advocates' Manuscript Collection(2020-04-07)Willshaw, GavinThe National Library of Scotland is pioneering a new approach to the digitization of medieval manuscripts, using the Book2Net Dragon system to image over 200 fragile and unique volumes in just one year. This paper provides an overview of the project to date, highlighting the balance the Library has been able to reach between maintaining quality and high throughput while minimizing damage made to the material. It discusses why the Library purchased the Dragon system, summarizes its key features and provides an honest assessment of the Library's experience to date. Furthermore, the paper outlines how this new work strand has been integrated into the wider digitization program and the strategic aim to have a third of collections in digital format by 2025.5 3 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

Item type:Report, Unlocking our Sound Heritage: Scotland 2018-2021.(2022-03)Scotland's SoundsThe Scottish hub of the Unlocking Our Sound Heritage project, based at the National Library of Scotland in Kelvin Hall, was tasked with digitising at risk audio recordings, cataloguing them and aiming to clear rights for online access and re-use. Over 3 years the project also facilitated engagement activities to raise the profile of sound archives with both public and professional audiences. The project team have preserved access to over 8,000 recordings from 15 different organisations across Scotland, before the project, were inaccessible due to the fragility of the format and the obsolescence of the playback equipment.3 2 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Research report, Equalities, Diversity and Inclusion Internship final report(2021)Chew, CarissaAs part of the continuing review and development of non-discriminatory Library cataloguing practices, a review of literature was conducted to inform modern standards of description for protected characteristics and other areas of cultural sensitivity. This review was the first stage both in identifying the descriptive terms to be used by the Library, and in the development of a policy to govern the way that the Library is to manage its descriptive and interpretative practices over time.   The focus of the work extended beyond archival catalogue descriptions (new and existing), to catalogues of published records, the creation of contextual information (web features, etc.), and the management (review, contextualisation, etc.) of surrogates of original documents that may contain sensitive information.2 1 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
