Sound and Place: Digital Mapping and Community Listening Practice

The project, Sound and Place: Digital Mapping and Community Listening Practice, started on 1 January 2019 and span for five months. It was funded through the AHRC Midlands Four Cities Doctoral Training Partnership at the University of Nottingham. Sound and Place explored the notion that listening is a new facet of museums experience and a challenge to the usual expectations of museum-going. The project aimed to develop a digital community sound map of the North of England to provide the National Science and Media Museum’s (NSMM) audiences with a platform for collecting and interpreting sound technologies to develop their understanding of sound-as-heritage. It also aimed to provide NSMM curators with new understanding of their listening audiences and how best to shape future sound exhibitions for them. Despite the museum’s best efforts, we are unable to make the PDF documents found within this collection fully screen reader accessible.
