In the run up to the centenary of his birth, and to mark the opening of the Injecting Hope exhibition, Dr Scott Anthony of the Research & Public History department partnered with the Czech Centre and The Poetry Society on a series of events celebrating the life and work of Miroslav Holub (1923-1998), the remarkable Czech immunologist and poet.
The immunologist and novelist Professor Sunetra Gupta, the engineer Dr Sunday Popo-Ola, the comedian and song writer Dominic Frisby, and the writer and performer Elf Lyons were all asked to select and perform one of Holub’s poems at the Science Museum. As part of a museum Lates event Vladimir Merta performed songs based on Holub’s poetry, interspersed with readings from the poets Jonas Hajek and Jack Cooper. Jack Cooper, an English poet and immunologist who won the Eric Gregory Award in 2022, was also commissioned by the Museum to write a series of poems in response to Holub’s work. These have subsequently been translated into Czech and Romanian. The work created by these individuals in homage (hommage) to Holub can be found in this collection.
