    The gardens created by William and Mary at Hampton Court Palace between 1689 and 1702 still contain more fabric from the Baroque period than any other gardens in the British Isles. For this reason alone a restoration of any part of the estate is of great interest and importance to historians and garden-lovers all over the world. But the restoration of the king's private or 'privy' garden, perhaps the most important of those at Hampton Court, undertaken by the Historic Royal Palaces Agency between May 1991 and July 1995, has a special significance. Never has a garden of this historic or artistic importance survived so well recorded, and so never before has a garden restoration been undertaken with such faithfulness to the historical record. The restoration of the Privy Garden is a milestone in garden restoration and garden history as the full armoury of modern research techniques have turned to focus on one uniquely preserved and documented site. This volume records not only the way the restoration was undertaken but also the results of four years of archival, horticultural and archaeological research into the garden. Yet despite modern archival and scientific techniques, all restorations have their limitations and these are also recorded both for the information of those who come after us at Hampton Court and for others undertaking garden restorations elsewhere.
