The reports showcase our national and regional research partnerships, funded and partnered projects, doctoral work, Trust research in the press, and how we’re building our internal research culture.

    This is the fourth edition to the National Trust's Annual Research Report, which showcases the applied academic research carried out by staff across the Trust and with our valued partners in research and practice. The Trust's 7th year as an Independent Research Organisation coincides with the start of the National Trust's 10-year strategy People and nature thriving. Our strategy sets out ambitious targets to 2035 and beyond, with goals to Restore Nature, End Unequal Access, and Inspire Millions. This report demonstrates how our research is generating new understanding to deliver that ambition, with examples of projects and partnerships on each of those goals.

    This is the third edition of the National Trust’s Annual Research Report, which shows the breadth of applied academic research carried out by staff across the Trust and with partners in research and practice. Projects and partnerships featured in this edition demonstrate the progress the organisation has made as an Independent Research Organisation, and include: - Generating practical solutions to complex challenges, such as collaborative approaches for decisions for wildlife and land management. - Shaping the national conversation on the evolving role of historic houses for people, and sharing less explored histories. - Bringing together academic disciplines across nature, beauty and history to understand what matters to people, and to help decision makers interpret the value of outdoor culture and heritage. - Innovating with new techniques, such as using laser vibration readings to understand the stability of historic ceilings. - Building our IRO capability and helping to build the UK’s heritage science infrastructure through our AHRC funded historic paint archive.

In this edition, we’re particularly focusing on the impact of our research and how it supports the Trust’s work, including enhancing our technical research capabilities, providing evidence for better decision-making, developing solutions for urgent challenges around biodiversity and climate change, and providing new knowledge to improve our interpretation at properties.
