Dan Dare is a classic British sci-fi comic hero, created by illustrator Frank Hampson in 1950. He first appeared as a comic strip in the Eagle – a comic book created by Marcus Morris to provide a wholesome alternative to US comics.
The period following the Second World War was a fertile time for British science, design, engineering and manufacturing and the Dan Dare comic showcased these scientific developments of the 1950s. Dan Dare and the Birth of Hi-Tech Britain was an exhibition on display at the Science Museum, London from 2008. It offered an intriguing reminder of the time when Britain was a hive of industry and innovation and the role that engineering played in developing the UK following the Second World War.
